What is Media Literacy?
Media literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, create, and act using all forms of communication, especially digital media.
Objectives:
- Understand how media messages are constructed
- Recognize intentions (commercial, political, ideological)
- Detect manipulation, misinformation, or fake news
- Develop a critical stance toward the information consumed
- Participate responsibly and ethically in the digital environment.
How are critical thinking and media literacy related?
They complement each other:
- Critical thinking helps you avoid falling into media manipulation.
- Media literacy gives you tools to analyze the information you receive every day through social media, television, news, etc.
Practical example:
- A viral news story on social media.
- Who publishes it?
- Do they have reliable sources?
- What other media outlets are saying the same thing?
This process is critical thinking applied to the media.
Practical Tools to Foster Critical Thinking
- Always ask "Why?" and "How do I know?"
- Verify sources: Is it a reliable medium? Is there data to support it?
- Contrast opinions: Don't rely solely on what confirms your beliefs.
- Learn to detect logical fallacies: appeals to emotion, hasty generalizations.
- Practice reasonable skepticism: Don't believe everything, but don't deny everything either.
